Wisla Krakow are typical title contenders
They are one of the teams with most history on the Polish league, and one of the strongest ones too.
Last season they were too far from title contention but this year we expect a more competitive Wisla, trying to withstand Legia Warsaw and Lech Poznan’s power.
Wisla signed a few players: Spanish goalkeeper Julian, who played on Granada, former Almería defender Fran Vélez and forward Carlitos López, who has been the team’s main reference on the attack, scoring 2 goals already.
Croatian midfielder Brlek has also started the season pretty well. Their latest player comes from FC Porto. Winger Zé Manel, who was loaned to Vitória de Setúbal last season, arrives at Krakow also on a loan until the end of the season, with the Polish side having a buy option on the Portuguese winger.
On this start of the season, Wisla has 9 points in 4 matches, with 3 wins and 1 away loss. They won against Wisla Plock mid-week for the Polish Cup, in a match where they rested some starters.
Cracovia Krakow is a team with less expression on the Polish championship, who usually fights not to get relegated. They don’t have a really strong roster, they have some youth and inexperience, but they don’t have much quality on their squad.
Despite having a big roster with several options, they don’t have any quality key players who can make a real difference. On this new season, they sit on 4 points with 4 matches played so far. They got those 4 points in the first 2 matches, which was a good start, but then they suffered 2 losses in the last 2 matches, suffering 6 goals in the process.
They played a cup match mid-week and were able to go through on penalties, after a 1-1 tie during the 90 minutes. Then the game went to extra time, but even then they couldn’t overcome the lower division team.
Wisla Cracovia vs Cracovia Pick:
On this Krakow derby, I expect a Wisla win. They are the bigger team and with a lot more resources, both individually and colectively, since they have a stronger squad overall. Wisla started off this season well, and if they want to win the league, this is the sort of matches they have to win.
Although it is a derby, which has a lot of specific characteristics, and there might be a lot of effort and emotions from side to side, I still think that Wisla will come out on top. Since they haven’t beaten Cracovia at home for a couple of years now, so they surely want to end their drought and get a win here again against one of their fiercest rivals.
We will possibly have Zé Manel already in this match, which should widen the set of options available offensively on their squad. In normal conditions, Wisla Krakow should win this derby.
