After winning the Europa League 3 years in a row, last season Sevilla decided that it is time to try their luck on the main UEFA competition: The Champions League.
This Sevilla under Sampaoli’s commands assumed, early in the season, that they want to shine both in the La Liga and the Champions League.
But the demand that playing in both competitions entails ended up being a negative consequence for the team, who was only able to ensure getting through the group stage on the last match, before falling to Leicester in the 1st knockout round.
In La Liga, the team was able to get between Barcelona and Real Madrid in the fight for the top spots, but then, in the final stretch, when the departure of Sampaoli was already a discussion topic.
The team broke down vertiginously, finishing more than 20 points behind champions Real Madrid and saw Atlético Madrid overtake them for the 3rd place, giving them the 4th spot that ensured them the access to this play-off.
For this season, maybe due to their “failure” last season, their objectives aren’t as ambitious and they are only aiming at a respectable campaign in the Champions League and finishing in the top 4 or 5 places in La Liga.
In order to accomplish their first objective, they must overcome the Turks tomorrow and they are already in a good position to do so, since they won the 1st leg away in Turkey last week. Now they only have to hold on or increase their advantage to participate in the group stage.
Aware of the negative effect that overconfidence might cause, the coach of the Spanish side Berizzo wants the team completely focused for this match, looking to the 1st leg result as if it ended 0-0. The manager wants Sevilla controlling the match and imposing their style of play.
The Spanish team, this season, doesn’t have the solutions they had last year, but they made smart moves in this transfer window and was able to mitigate those losses, remaining with an interesting team that has every condition to be present in the group stage.
Carriço and Soria are missing due to injury and Vazquez is still doubtful.
Istanbul Basaksehir: The turkish side who surprised everyone by finishing 2nd in the Turkish league has invested heavily in strengthening their team for this upcoming season looking to participate in the Champions League. However, they weren’t expecting to draw such a “powerful” opponent.
The Turks have an interesting team with players like Adebayor, Elia, Chedjou, Clichy, Inler, Manuel da Costa, Babacan, Visca e Mossoró, that make this a dangerous team that shouldn’t be dismissed.
The Turkish manager, despite giving the favouritism to the opponent, wants his players to leave it all on the pitch until the final whistle. If that happens, he will be satisfied no matter what the final result is.
Chedjou who has been injured is still doubtful for this encounter.
Sevilla vs Istanbul Basaksehir Pick:
Berizzo, who had already done a good job at Celta de Vigo last season, making them play good football, should continue his good career at Sevilla this season, with higher ambitions this time because of the team’s higher quality.
I believe that Sevilla will try to dominate the match from the start, trying not to give their opponents any chance to create scoring opportunities.
Still, I think that Sevilla will start the match well and will be able to score first, on the 1st half as well, scoring a goal that will give them tranquility and seal the faith of this play-off
