Rosenborg are well on their way to win the Norwegian championship since they sit in 1st place with an advantage regarding the 2nd place.
Rosenborg: The Norwegian had the objective of trying to reach the Champions’ League group stage and they even eliminated Dundalk, on a close tie, but then got knocked out by Celtic, since they lost 1-0 at home in the 2nd leg after getting the 0-0 draw in the 1st leg away.
Regarding this Europa League’s play-off, they have drawn Ajax, which was the defeated finalist of this same competition last season.
And defying all odds, the Norwegian have won 1-0 in the 1st leg at Amsterdam and now have a good chance to advance, after that unexpected result obtained in the Netherlands.
It isn’t decided at all, but playing at home they might be able to get the result they need in order to advance to the group stage.
Ajax: The Dutch side missed out on the domestic title last season, with Feyenoord winning it, so they had to play in the Champions League’s qualification stage, where they were eliminated against Nice, due to away goals.
A 1-1 draw in France and a 2-2 draw at home wasn’t enough and saw Ajax getting eliminated from the Champions League, which sent them here.
On this Europa League, they reached the final last year and lost against Manchester United. This season, things got a little tricky after losing at home against Rosenborg 1-0 in the 1st leg.
Their league start wasn’t too bright as well, which leaves me with the impression that the team has felt the Champions League’s elimination. They have quality, especially on the young players in the squad.
They have lost important players like Klaasen, who gave great balance to this team. Last weekend they have won 3-1 in a league match, and that might have given them new confidence to reverse this tie, that is not looking easy after the 1st leg result.
Rosenborg vs Ajax Pick:
Ajax is the favourite but I’m not sure they will be able to reverse this play-off round.
They have the offensive quality needed with Hunteelar, Dolberg, Kluivert and some other players that, when inspired, can make the difference, but I don’t expect the Dutch to keep a clean sheet either.
Rosenborg has some quality in the final third and they should score as well. I think it will be a close match between two teams who like to play offensive football.
Ajax, because of their disadvantage, will have to definitely do it, so I expect a match with goals and thrill until the end.
I made this bet last week in the 1st leg, but now, with this being the 2nd leg, and after the 1st leg result, I think it has all the ingredients to work out well.
