I was feeling a struggling Federer here in the US Open. The two first matches for the Swiss were scary.
Filled with inconsistency, a lot of ups and downs, he suffered a bit against opponents that in theory, shouldn’t cause him much trouble.
He ended up playing more minutes than he would’ve wanted ideally, going to a 5th set in the two first rounds. Of course, the injury rumours have returned in full force.
Especially after his weird loss in the Montreal final and then the walkover from the Cincinnati Masters. Federer always plays in Cincinnati so that absence suggested a problem.
But doubting the best player in tennis history is always hard. And when I thought that the more experienced opponents such as Lopez and Kohl could win a few sets against him and make his life a bit harder, what happens?
He wins both matches in straight sets, showing a firmness he hadn’t shown yet in this tournament.
Here he will face an opponent that already defeated him on a US Open final.
Of course, that today’s Del Potro is not that player anymore.
His wrist injury and other physical problems have reduced his strength. But his fierceness is still there, after what we saw on his last match. It is an Argentinian tradition, to never give up.
He might not have the talent that David Nalbandian had but he has the consistency, coldness and drive that makes him one of the most impressive players in the circuit.
He is a player that loves to play in these fast courts, having a very offensive style and specialist on shots from anywhere around the court.
Roger Federer vs Juan Martin Del Potro – Betting Tip and Prediction:
The Head-to-head record shows 16 Federer’s victories against 5 from Del Potro.
In 2017, Federer has beaten the Argentinian in Miami in straight sets. But despite this being a tough task for him, I’m going against the Swiss here.
I think Del Potro is able to at least win a set.
He arrives here after a tough battle on his last match but his style can bother Federer on these fast courts.
