Real Madrid’s demonstration of strength on the 1st leg of this Spanish Supercup was surprising, especially the way they were able to dominate Barcelona.
But that was only the confirmation of what the “Merengues” had shown in the European Supercup. With Isco leading the midfield, supported by Kroos and Kovacic (who replaced Modric) and with Casemiro always up to the task in hand, this squad became unstoppable.
Real only got the goal after an error by Piqué, but they were always the better team on the pitch. And after Messi was able to tie 1-1 with a penalty goal, Real was unstoppable in the last minutes.
Even after Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off, Asensio was able to get the 3-1, with a sensational goal.
The Supercup is now practically theirs, which forces Barcelona to win by 3 unanswered goals or a better difference, in order to strip them off this title. This Barcelona side, having lost Neymar, is not finding ways to create threats against opponents of Real’s calibre.
Even if the solution for that is to focus their game more around Messi, the team led by Ernesto Valverde still gives rise to many doubts regarding positioning and ability to outplay their opponents.
Real Madrid vs Barcelona Pick:
In a way, we are witnessing a change of style on both Real Madrid and Barcelona, which only became more evident after Neymar’s departure. On the Real’s side, their attacking trio BBC is not their only source of power now, with several new players such as Isco and Asensio stepping up in this stage.
If the advantage they take into this 2nd leg should be enough to secure them the title, I think it is very likely that Real try to win the match anyway, even if they are facing a Barcelona side hungry for revenge.
The superiority from Zidane’s team is, at this point, more than evident.
