Rafael Nadal is a Spanish 31-year-old player that is currently No.1 in the ATP Rankings.
He doesn’t need any presentations. He is practically unbeatable in clay, but he is not so strong in faster surfaces such as grass or hard court.
After several wins in a row in clay, namely in Roland Garros, the player didn’t do well in Wimbledon, in the grass season, being eliminated by Gilles Muller.
Now on hard court, Rafa will try to keep his 1st place in the ATP hierarchy.
However, in both rounds of this 2017 US Open, Nadal has dropped the 1st set, first against Lajovic and then against Taro Daniel.
Leonardo Mayer is an Argentinian 30-year-old player that currently sits in the 59th position of the ATP Rankings.
He is a player that, just like Nadal, feels more comfortable on clay, but after being a lucky loser in the US Open qualifying, he got two great results.
Firstly, he eliminated Gasquet 3-1 and then he took care of Japanese Suguita, also 3-1. In both matches he lost the first set and then came back.
He has been averaging around 5 aces per set and he has not been choking on break points. Mentally he is very strong and against Nadal, the mental aspect is essential.
Rafael Nadal vs Leonardo Mayer – Betting Tip and Prediction:
Head-to-Head: 4-0 Nadal
In all matches between these two, Nadal has never dropped a set. However, they haven’t faced each other in over 3 years.
From what I’ve seen, Mayer can cause the upset against Nadal, if his 1st serve is at the same level it was on the 2 previous matches.
Obviously, he won’t be able to fight with the Spaniard from the baseline, but that’s not his style either, he prefers shorter points.
That’s how he eliminated Gasquet and mainly Sugita, that wasn’t able to keep up with his offensive power.
To summarize, It seems to me that taking Mayer to win at least 1 set has great value here and is a good opportunity to make some money.
