PSG sharpening roster for the Champions League
- Updated: 30th December 2019
Despite the club’s director of football Leonardo recent warning that the roster was locked but that he could make some moves in case there were interesting opportunities, the truth is that the rumours (according to the newspaper AS) indicate that the Parisian side is looking to make some surgical changes on the team in January already.
Strengthening the defensive midfield
One of the sectors where the team seems to have less strength right now is the defensive midfield, with the departure of Adrian Rabiot to Juventus having been compensated by the arrivals of Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye. However, Thomas Tuchel seems to be interested in having 1 or 2 more options for that area of the pitch.
Right now, Emre Can is one of the names with more power to reinforce the club soon and according to rumours, he has already approached his friend Blaise Matuidi to obtain information about the Parisian club.
The other option might be the Brazilian midfielder from Napoli Allan, that is currently on a Neapolitan side in crisis and with big internal divisions which means a departure can be a potential scenario for several players who have a lot of interest in international football.
Renewal of the stars on hold
But the talk isn’t all about reinforcements on PSG. Neymar and Kylian Mbappé are the crown jewels and their contracts end in 2022, therefore they have to renew those contracts, although negotiations aren’t expected to be easy, taking into consideration the desire of both players to move to Spanish clubs.
Neymar tried as hard as he could to move to Barcelona during the transfer window and, naturally, he won’t forget that possibility in the near future, with a non-renewal of his contract exerting some additional pressure on the Parisians in order to release him.
And the same thing happens with Kylian Mbappé, that is desired by Real Madrid and can see his price go down
significantly as his contract with PSG gets closer to its end.

The French attacker is considered by many the next best player in the world and his performances haven’t let his fans down, with the Brazilian Neymar also being on a great moment of form.
They are both chasing the Champions League’s title this season and, in case they win it, their precipitation to leave might be even larger because they would have fulfilled their ultimate goal at the French club.
That dream of winning that European competition with PSG is priced at 6.50 on the bookmakers such as 1XBet, and the draw of the round of 16 that dictated a clash with Borussia Dortmund wasn’t exactly negative, although they also can’t be considered lucky either.
Several players on their way out
While new targets are identified and they are trying at all costs to maintain their crown jewels on the roster, PSG also have several players that are in a position to abandon the club soon.
The name that clearly stands out from this list is Edinson Cavani’s, top goal scorer of the club’s history.
As he reaches a more advanced age and after the arrival of Mauro Icardi for his position, it seems like the Uruguayan lost some prominence on Thomas Tuchel’s side and the most likely scenario is that he will look to recover his relevance at a different club on the next couple of months.

His contract ends at the end of the season and he can leave then on a free transfer, but he can also reach an agreement with some club for an immediate transfer in January, by means of a payment of a small fee to PSG.
Layvin Kurzawa lost preponderance on the wings and he might leave in January already so that the club still makes some money out of him, because his contract ends in June.
The same thing should happen with Choupo-Moting that obviously doesn’t have room on the current luxurious roster of the Parisian club.
Thiago Silva is already thinking beyond his footballing career
In conclusion, the central defender and captain of the team Thiago Silva is preparing to renew his contract as well soon.
However, some rumours say that he could already be trying to plan for a potential future as a member of PSG’s technical staff, taking into consideration that his career is nearing its end.

The Brazilian defender is right now one of the club’s icons and, naturally, he should have a guaranteed role on the club’s structure, even because the director of football is also Brazilian – Leonardo – and that can make that potential transition from the pitch to outside the pitch even easier in the next couple of years.
But for now, he will give his contribution on the pitch, looking to get more trophies and notoriety for the most successful French club on the last decade.
