In this 1st round match of the Champions’ League Group D, the Greek champions Olympiakos
will face the Portuguese 3rd placed team at stadium Georgios Karaiskakis, in Piraeus.
This will be one of the decisive matches for both teams in this group, considering that, theoretically, the two qualification spots are already assigned for Barcelona and Juventus, who will fight between themselves for the leadership of this group.
On the Greek side, central defender Jagos Vukovic will be absent, while on the Portuguese side, Fábio Coentrão and Daniel Podence will be unavailable.
Here we have the possible starting XI’s for the match:
Olympiakos: Kapino, Elabdellao, Romao, Retsos, Milic, Odjidja, Gillet, Pardo, Fortounis, Marin, El Fardou.
Sporting CP: Patricio, Piccini, Coates, Mathieu, Silva, Fernandes, Battaglia, Martins, Acuna, Fernandes, Dost
The Greeks are and have been chronical national champions in Greece, which ensures them a usual presence in the Champions league, despite their European campaigns not being that great, because the team isn’t able to transport that domestic dominance into the international stage, due to the demand and difficulty;
Besides that, their ease in winning the Greek title ends up hurting them on their international competitiveness.
As for Sporting, they arrive at this group stage after knocking Steaua Bucharest out in the play-off. This is the first time they reach the Champions’ League group stage with Jorge Jesus in charge.
Their good start of the season should be highlighted, since they are leading their domestic league. All that is left to know is if they can continue that momentum on a tougher competition.
Olympiakos vs Sporting – Betting Tip and Prediction:
Despite Olympiakos not always being able to do well on European competitions, I think the team, despite all of that, clearly has the skills to fight for a 3rd place in this group with Sporting.
With this being a tough stadium to visit (most of the teams aren’t even able to get points at this ground).
Ithink that Sporting, at most, will only be able to get a draw, worrying more with their match against the Greeks in Lisbon.
This way, I believe in a home win, by a slim margin.
