Northern Ireland vs Switzerland: On the path towards the 2018 World Cup…
Eight European national teams still have hopes of getting their ticket to Russia.
On the 2nd placed teams’ play-off, we’ll have 4 very balanced matches. To start off, Northern Ireland hosts Switzerland.
The Northern Irish have had an interesting campaign on the 2016 Euros, reaching the round of 16 and confirming their new International status on this qualification stage.
Without being able to pose a threat to Germany, who was very superior to every other team in group C, Northern Ireland ended up standing out more than Czech Republic and Norway, two other contenders to the 2nd place in this group.
The Irish’s main strength is their competitive ability and, although they go into this play-off without favouritism, starting at home might allow them some ambition when it comes to qualifying.
Switzerland, for what they’ve done throughout the qualification stage, maybe deserved more luck.
By starting off with a home win over Portugal, and on a group where they never faced many difficulties, considering their opponents, they needed to get some points on the last match to ensure qualification.
Well, losing to Portugal, the Swiss went to this play-off where they come in after dropped the first points on the last round of the qualification stage.
That’s a mental challenge for a very experienced team at the international stage that has also done very well at the last Euros.
Northern Ireland vs Switzerland – Betting Tip and Prediction:
Considering the format of this play-off round for the Russia World Cup, it is expectable that we see a more cautious approach from both sides, trying to avoid any mistakes.
Northern Ireland, playing at home, will eventually feel a bigger responsibility to act, but a 0-0 result wouldn’t be totally unfavourable for them going into the 2nd leg.
