The quarterback from the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, signed this week a true retirement plan. The Texan signed his renewal with the Chiefs for the incredible amount of 503 million dollars, on a 10-year deal. This is the most valuable contract in the history of sports worldwide
PATRICK MAHOMES: THE NEW NFL SENSATION
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been the true sensation in the American football league. The Texan was drafted in 2017, and just like other stars of American sports, he wasn’t the first pick from the franchises.
Mahomes was the 10th overall pick from the 2017 Draft and on his rookie season, he was a reserve for the quarterback Alex Smith, and only earned his spot as a starter for the franchise when Smith left the team and was traded to the Washington Redskins.
On his first season playing, in fact, he managed to get 50 touchdown passes and 5907 passing yards. This s eason, he went with the Chiefs to the conference final, losing to Tom Brady’s New England Patriots.
From 2018 onwards, Mahomes has been showing he will be one of the best players in the history of the NFL. Considered by many one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league, Mahomes has power, agility, an unmatched vision and a true cannon for an arm.
In a short career length, Mahomes already has appearances on the Pro Bowl and the All-Star Game of the NFL. On the previous season, he carried the KC Chiefs to the Super Bowl title by defeating the San Francisco 49ers by 31-20, in Miami.
Mahomes threw for 2086 yards on the Super Bowl, managed to get 3 touchdowns (2 passing, 1 running) and he became the MVP of the final. The Texan became the first quarterback to win the season MVP award (2018) and the Super Bowl before 25 years of age.
Mahomes’ contract would go until 2021, but the Chiefs, scared of losing their superstar, increased his agreement for 10 years more, for the modest sum of 503 million dollars. With that, the QB will be the highest paid athlete in the history of the United States, surpassing Mike Trout, who signed with the Los Angeles Angels by 426,5 million dollars.
LEBRON JAMES ASKS IF MAHOMES CAN LEND HIM SOME MONEY
Patrick Mahomes, besides being talented, has good friends. One of them is simply LeBron James, NBA superstar who congratulated his friend for this accomplishment. On his Instagram account, LeBron asked Mahomes “Can you lend me 5 bucks?”
As a comparison, and to have a clear notion of the magnitude of this contract that was just signed by Mahomes, let’s take the example of LeBron James himself.
The superstar signed with the Lakers for 4 seasons, for a total amount of 153 million dollars, which means, 38.25 million dollars annually.
Mahomes still has 2 years of contract, before the new deal is valid. From then on, he will receive a minimum amount of 400 million dollars.
IS IT WORTH IT TO PAY SO MUCH FOR ONE PLAYER?
The Kansas City Chiefs are valued in 2.3 billion dollars, which means, Mahomes alone costs a total of 21% of the budget from his franchise. One of the discussions is if it is really worth it to pay so much for a player, and the first answer would be yes, since he is a phenom.
Of course it is a risk, especially because of the contract duration. On a season, the player can contract a serious injury and that is possible, especially since we’re talking about a very brutal sport like American football.
The problem is that the hype surrounding Mahomes is absurd, and if the Chiefs didn’t pay, another franchise would. Besides that, Mahomes brough the Chiefs a Super Bowl title, which didn’t happen since 1970. The numbers are also spectacular, with almost 76 TDs and only 18 interceptions in 2 seasons, and a success-rate of 66% on his passes.

Tom Brady, a legend of the sport, won 3 SB and lost 1, after the 36 years of age. In 2031, year where the contract with the KS Chiefs will end, Mahomes will reach his 36th birthday, and he will possibly play until much later than that.
Is it risky? Of course it is! But the numbers and the likelihood of more titles are in favour of Mahomes and the Chiefs. Only a serious injury could get in the way of several seasons of more spectacular numbers from the QB.
He brought an almost unprecedented title, which gives the franchise a fantastic mediatic coverage, besides his undeniable quality. It is a lot of money, but it seems like he will be worth every penny.
