NFL Draft 2020 – Tua Tagovailoa – Following the footsteps of one of the great players of his state in history is not the easiest of tasks
NFL Draft 2020 – Tua Tagovailoa – But Tua Tagovailoa did not only did it, he did it with excellence, surpassing his predecessor, Marcus Mariota, at the Saint Louis School, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
During his years at the school, Tua had a total of 8158 yards, and with that he became the number 1 quarterback in the state of Hawaii on that statistic.
On Rivals’ website, Tua was the 3rd best dual threat QB of the class, only behind Kellen Mond and Tate Martell.
But for ESPN, Tagovailoa was the best. And Alabama wanted to recruit the best: in 2015 they had recruited Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts in the following year.
Both were considered the best on their position. The high-level competition was the challenge that the player from Hawaii desired.
Tua was considered the MVP of the Elite 11, a competition that includes the best high school quarterbacks and he got scholarship offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Florida, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Louisville, LSU, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, Oregon State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA, UNLV, USC, Washington, Washington State, and of course, Alabama.
He opted to defend the colours of Crimson Tide and that’s where he finished his college career with 69% pass completion, over 7000 yards and 87 touchdowns against only 11 interceptions.
Why will he be drafted?
In my opinion, Tagovaiola’s biggest quality is where he places the ball for his receivers (ball placement). That’s something that I think he has different from other quarterbacks, the timing to release the ball. I see him having a good trigger when the play starts.
Speaking about trigger, his mechanic is one of the cleanest on that aspect, being extremely compact and with a good hip rotation.
He has been absurdly decisive since he came into the field, on the final of 2017/18 against Georgia. He has strength in his arm for the passes that are required in the NFL.
His hip injury, the one he is still recovering from, is without a doubt his biggest red flag. But it is not the only one. Tagovailoa has a long record of losing games and snaps because of injuries – like on the ankle for example.
Still, there are some doubts about his production at college potentially being inflated by Alabama’s absurd talent (since they had receivers like Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs and Devonta Smith).
Still, some turnovers could have been avoided if he didn’t force some unnecessary passes to some inexistent spaces.
The biggest concern regarding Tua Tagovailoa is about his injuries during his college career.

Still, with the coronavirus outbreak, the NFL teams weren’t able to perform the usual medical tests, which will probably generate even more doubts regarding the health of Alabama’s quarterback.
For that reason, I believe he will be drafted after the 3rd pick.
I believe that at least 7 of those guys will be drafted during the first day.
