The Spaniard Rafael Nadal and the Canadian Bianca Andreescu have become champions on the courts of the US Open.
Besides the title and the prize money, both athletes really improved a lot on their respective rankings, towards the top, that seems to be closer and closer.
Nadal hunting for Djokovic!
When starting the campaign towards the US Open title, Rafael Nadal didn’t appear as the biggest favourite to lift the trophy. Djokovic was the one who had the lowest odds to take the trophy home.
However, Djokovic fell halfway through. On the match against Wawrinka, the Serbian had to abandon the match, due to an injury, which ends up being worrisome for the next competitions of the season, and opens up real chances for Nadal to get closer to him on the fight for the top of the ranking.

Nadal was on the other side of the draw, and he was doing very well, with his usual playstyle, very intense and aggressive, managing to control any opponent. Until the semi-finals, the only one that was able to take a single set from the Spaniard was Marin Cilic.
Nobody could keep up with El Toro’s rhythm, especially due to the fact that he positions well behind the line, being able to return most of the balls. And, to make things better: with a lot of power!
It is true that Nadal didn’t face any player from the top 10 until the final, since Federer, who should cross his path, was surprisingly defeated by Dimitrov, after being 2 sets up.
The great final against Medvedev!
Although it wasn’t very easy, the start was very favourable to the Spaniard, who opened a 2-0 advantage. During the first set, the match was really balanced, since the Russian was able to connect very powerful attacks and create difficulties for Nadal to hold his service games.
The first set had a break for each side, until Nadal on the decisive game, confirmed the 1-0 on his 2nd set point.
The 2nd set was very quiet for the Spaniard, that closed with a 6-3. However, on the third set, both players were able to serve very well, giving very few chances to the opponent, and the Russian won by 7-5.
The 4th set continued with both players being very aggressive on his serves. Although we had some very long games, neither player was giving an opportunity for the other to break.
Until that, on the last service game, Nadal, after a 40-15, allowed Medvedev to react and was broken, taking the match to the 5th set.
The 5th set brought a downfall for Nadal’s confidence, and the Russian was improving a lot on the match, being very solid on the ball exchanges.
But Nadal showed why he is one of the best players in history, returning each ball more aggressively, breaking 2 of Medvedev’s service games and even being broken after that, he was able to show a lot of resistance to the Russian’s attacks.
The penultimate game was very intense, just like the rest of the match. Nadal had 2 match points, but it was on his serve that he was finally, after 5 hours, able to beat the brave and resilient Russian.
This was the 19th Grand Slam title of Nadal’s career, the 4th in the US Open, and he is only 1 title behind Roger Federer, that is the biggest champion in history.
The Spaniard played on his 27th Grand Slam final, and he maintains the record of only him (Nadal), Federer and Djokovic having won the biggest tournaments since 2016, 12 in total.
Andreescu wins the title amongst the women
Not many believed on the Canadian, since that Serena was hungry for the title, still looking for her 24th Grand Slam title, and still resentful of her recent losses.
Andreescu’s style surprised Serena, that inclusively highlighted that the Canadian’s returns put a lot of pressure on her serve. And that’s exactly how Bianca kept doing well.
Right on the first service game, Serena felt the strong return of the opponent, getting broken and not being able to find herself again in the set.
Pure bliss 😍

She was almost never able to put up resistance against Andreescu’s serve and really struggled to hold her own serves.
After the 6-3 victory in the 1st set, Andreescu didn’t have the same facility in the 2nd set. With a streak of breaks from both sides, it was a more balanced set, intense and with a lot of aggressiveness on the ball exchanges.
Both players struggled with the returns, and neither of them was able to feel comfortable on serve.
In total, we have seen 7 breaks of serve, but throughout the match, Serena made more mistakes, with 8 double faults, and that is a problem if she wants to stay in every game.
The victory by 7-5 on the 2nd set gave the title to Andreescu, and her entrance into the top 10 for the first time on her career. As for Serena, she fell to 9th place, and she is now under even more pressure to return to playing at a great level.
