Marin Cilic vs Kyle Edmund – Australian Open: Completely unexpected semi-finals at the 2018 Australian Open
With Cilic being super favourite to reach another final in his career, having however the debutant on these type of matches the British Kyle Edmund.
Cilic is a fantastic player and he is proving it once again.
He is a top player that has always been at the top and that is maybe the best in the world besides the usual top-5/6, being the best at the moment alongside Federer, taking advantage of the prolonged absence of some other names very well.
But he is not only good due to their absences, and his last couple of seasons prove exactly that.
And this season, he is currently ranked 6th on the ATP Rankings, with his career best being number 4, but after this Australian Open he will have conditions to climb even more and even surpass his personal record, which I hope he does.
This season, he has a 7-2 record, all on hard courts, having reached the semi-finals in Pune where he was defeated by the champion Gilles Simon.
Then he did poorly at Kooyong, losing to Ebden, but in reality, that was only practice for Cilic.
At the Australian Open he has been doing very well, having eliminated good opponents, even knocking out Nadal in 5 sets on the previous round, having forced the Spaniard to retire.
In total, he has 5 wins and has only dropped 4 sets, 2 of them against Nadal. Cilic hasn’t done great Australian Opens, but this season he has already matched his best record, which is the semi-finals he reached in 2010, and he has everything to reach the final, where he will probably have to face Federer.
As for Edmund, he can be very satisfied for having reached so far, but I don’t believe he will be able to get much further. He is a simple player, an interesting one,
but despite being young, he shouldn’t be able to accomplish great things in the circuit, only standing out here and there.
This will surely be his highest point this season and maybe one that he will never be able to repeat in his career. But he has to try and take advantage and maybe, who knows, get even further, but with Cilic and Federer ahead of them, it is hard to be confident.
Edmund is 49th in the world but he has already been 40th, which means he will maybe be able to surpass his best with his performance here. Edmund participated in this tournament 3 times and the best he had achieved was a 2nd round, last season.
This year he has a 7-1 record, having only played in Brisbane and here.
In Brisbane, he went 2-1, having lost to Dimitrov on the quarter-finals, although he curiously has just eliminated the Bulgarian from this tournament, having therefore a 5-0 record here.
I should highlight the fact that Edmund, except for Dimitrov, didn’t have great opponents upon him, but still, it is remarkable for him to reach this stage, since he still faced some superior opponents such as Anderson and Dimitrov.
However, the remaining ones were Seppi, Basilashvili and Istomin, who are all average players.
Marin Cilic vs Kyle Edmund – Betting Tip and Prediction:
These 2 players have already met once, in 2017, in Shanghai, and the win went to Cilic without many problems. On this match, I expect the same.
Cilic will really win with some ease and therefore, despite the low odds, I think there is value here.
I really believe on a 3-0 favouring the Croatian, with this being an unbalanced semi-final, but still, I will only go with the Moneyline. My bet is Cilic to win and to reach the tournament’s final.
