The Spanish league will begin . This season will be all special, because it marks the farewell of one of the biggest names in the history of the competition: Messi.
MESSI: THE LAST STAR OF LA LIGA
This will be a farewell tour of Lionel Messi through Spain. The Argentinean star will have his last season with Barcelona’s jersey, and will leave the Spanish league orphaned of big stars.
In the last decades, the Spanish league has been considered the great center of reunion of great players. The best players of each season shone with the jerseys of Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Who does not remember the Real Madrid Galacticos, with Zidane, Beckham, Raúl, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos. We can cite all these last years of Barcelona, through the magic of Ronaldinho Gaucho, the spectacular talent of Iniesta and Xavi, Neymar and Suarez.
Little by little all the greatest stars were abandoning Spain’s football. The departure of Cristiano Ronaldo is still felt and turned out to be a milestone in the decline of the competition. There was still Lionel Messi, but he was less and less encouraged to stay there.
Now Barcelona has made a clean sweep, and Messi, for contractual reasons, could not jump off this sinking ship. This will be the last season of the number 10 jersey in Spanish turfs, and although La Liga is keeping great players, Messi will be the last big star to leave.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM LA LIGA 20/21?
The current champions, Real Madrid, didn’t go shopping in this beginning of season, and will not have a team full of stars.
They didn’t even come close to winning the Champions League, and their performance in the Spanish league, even though they won the title, was not brilliant at all.
The club is focusing on the reform of the Santiago Bernabéu, and after a study on the billionaire loss of European clubs due to the Corona Virus crisis, the merengues decided to be more restrained. This will compensate the absurd expenses of the last seasons, with young players who didn’t even came close to worth what was paid.
Real Madrid will keep up with their mix of experienced players and youngsters with some evolution margin, but nothing to excite its fans, or make the world stop to see a game of the merengues.
Barcelona, on the other hand, managed to lose the Spanish title after leading it with a few rounds left, and was still humiliated by Bayern in the Champions League.
Barcelona are going in the opposite way of Real Madrid. They have fired the coach and sent several players away, like Rakitic, Arthur and Suarez. Coutinho came back, who didn’t work out before, they kept Messi against his will, and are intending to spend millions in order to strengthen the squad.
Spanish newspapers report the interest in Lautaro Martinez, Depay and Wijnaldum, to strengthen a team that at the level of Erope’s best, is only average.
THE REST OF THE TABLE
Atlético Madrid, Spanish league’s third force, are also not spending a lot in order to reinforce its cast. The club defined the hiring of Carrasco for 4 years, and is still waiting for the departure of striker Diego Costa. This week big news is a possible hiring of Luiz Suarez, who has not yet closed with Juventus.
His high salary is slowing down the business, and the lack of resources can make the team stop there and bet on the same squad for this season.
Sevilla is another team that can be a rock in the shoe of both Real Madrid and Barcelona, however, the squad is not strong enough to fight in a long shot competition.
The Europa League champions will have a great season ahead, starting with the Super Cup against Bayern, and a strong Champions League. La Liga will be in the background.
The club repatriated Rakitic, from Barcelona, and signed a 5-year contract with Oscar Rodriguez, who belonged to Real Madrid but played for Leganés.
In short, once again the competition will be between Real Madrid and Barcelona, but both have not had great players and neither much technical performance in the last few months.
If even Real Madrid is containing their expenses, we cannot expect smaller teams to assemble great casts. Barcelona is trying to reassemble, and that is a big question mark, with Koeman debuting, a demotivated Messi and a squad below the expectations.
It could be the ideal season for a surprise like Atletico Madrid, but looking at their recent performances and their low investment, I find it difficult to something like that to happen this season.
