With the transfer market about to close in England, Man City announced recently the signing of the Portuguese right back João Cancelo that played for Juventus. This way Pep Guardiola’s side gains a reliable alternative to Kyle Walker on the right side of defence.
João Cancelo: A modern right-back
As time goes by, it is more and more important for a right-back to have in his arsenal technical qualities that allow him to go up a lot of metres on the pitch and even, sometimes, make the difference on the attack.
At 25 years of age, the young player trained in Benfica is clearly an example of these modern right-backs that have great technical qualities, always being able to dribble past one more opponent before crossing, shooting or passing to the centre of the box.
João Cancelo shined on Spanish football playing for Valencia and he seemed to represent an added value for Juventus, although the playstyle of the Italians didn’t always favour his style.
Now, Pep Guardiola has understood that his potential might be the perfect fit for his team, and he spent 65 million Euros on this signing, at the same time they sold the Brazilian Danilo to Juventus by 37 Million.
Basically, it was a swap of right-backs whereby Manchester City spent 28 million Euros.
João Cancelo’s partnership with Bernardo Silva might be successful
João Cancelo’s ability to gain meters on the right wing is one of his main weapons, and the possibility of forming a duo on the flank with Bernardo Silva might enhance even more that characteristic.
Playing with a pure winger on the flank, Cancelo might somewhat be stopped on his attacking moves, but with Bernardo constantly roaming around the center of the pitch, that will open up space for Cancelo to be even more offensive than the normally is.
That has been visible in some matches of the Portuguese national team where the two players played in the flank.
Bernardo has the ability to draw attentions on the central corridor, then isolating whoever appears on the wing, and that can be a very valuable strategy for Manchester City on the new season.
Bernardo Silva is coming off the best season of his career and he is certainly really motivated and “spiked” due to the fact that he was out of the nominees for the Ballon D’Or.
After a season where he won a lot of trophies, Bernardo Silva has already started 2019/20 with a new title, winning the Community Shield against Liverpool.
João Cancelo might not only benefit from the quality of City’s team, but also add some trump cards to it, namely when it comes to offensive creativity that already is plenty on the side of the Citizens.
Three signings on the transfer window
Unlike in previous seasons, Manchester City were actually modest in terms of activity on the transfer market, only hiring 3 players.
In any case, if we add the value of the three transfers, we conclude that the club spent something like 147 million Euros on those three players.
Naturally, there were also some departures that allowed them to gain some money. However, it was only 50 million Euros, which means the club spent more than they’ve earned once again.
The arrival of Rodri from Atlético de Madrid looks to offer an alternative to Fernandinho on the defensive midfield of the team, while the Spanish youngster Angelino arrives more as a future prospect.
New Man City signing #Rodri was hand-picked by #Guardiola for the "Pivote" role in his system. This is a very difficult role in all phases of play, and requires a player with great and quick understanding of the play. pic.twitter.com/Nk3naOs522

And now, with João Cancelo, Manchester City counts with what is probably the most valuable duo of right-backs on the planet. Is Guardiola considering a switch of one of them to the left, or will they have to intersperse their condition as starters during the season?
It will be interesting to understand the way Guardiola will lead with this luxury of having Kyle Walker and João Cancelo on the same roster.
I should highlight that only on these two right-backs, Manchester City has spent something like 117 million Euros. It is truly astonishing!
Attacking on every front!
With the arrivals of Rodri and Cancelo to add quality alternatives in needed sectors, Manchester City start the new season with a
luxurious roster and filled with options, ready to fight for every competition they participate on.
Well, the quality of their roster allied to the quality of the system implemented by Pep Guardiola make Manchester City a favourite on the competitions they are taking part on.
In the Premier League, the Citizens are priced at 1.40 on the bookmakers like Bet365 to renew the English title, while in the Champions League they are at the top of the contenders’ list with odds of 5.00 on 1xbet.
Will Guardiola finally win the Champions League again after his hegemonical period as manager of Barcelona?
