The wait is over, and finally Pep Guardiola got a new defender. It’s Rúben Dias, young defender from Benfica and Portugal’s national team. What amazes the most is the amount paid, which raises questions about Guardiola’s cost to City since he is there.
RÚBEN DIAS ARRIVES AS ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE REINFORCEMENTS OF THE GUARDIOLA ERA
This looks like a simply bombastic hiring, made by Manchester City. Rúben Dias, former Benfica defender and set in the Portuguese national team, will now wear the blue of the English team, as one of the most expensive reinforcements of the Pep Guardiola era.
The 23-year-old defender cost the Citizens’ safes a total of 68 million euros. The transaction also involved Otamendi going to the Portuguese club, for a total of 15 million euros.
Rúben Dias is the third most expensive signing made by a team led by Pep Guardiola. Ahead of him are only the midfielder Rodri, hired from Atletico Madrid, and striker Ibrahimovic.
Guardiola had the demanding of counting with a good defender, and this was his punctual hiring for the season. Napoli’s Koulibaly almost ended up in England, but City couldn’t close his signing, and spent all the money they would invest in him, in the hiring of the young Portuguese.
Rúben Dias made a total of 137 games for Benfica’s team, and scored 12 goals. He made his professional debut in the 2015/2016 season, and has already been called to play 19 games for the Portuguese national team.
No one is contesting the need for Manchester City to hire a new defender. The question is whether Rúben days is really worth such an investment, and whether he comes as the solution for a failed sector in the last seasons or not.
Last week, Jorge Jesus, Benfica‘s coach, praised the young defender, putting him as an important part of his team. Even because, Dias was the only Benfica player in the starting 11 of the Portuguese national team.
On the other hand, Benfica did not have a great season, especially defensively, and Rúben Dias joined the wave of criticism.
Many consider him to have a potential progression margin, but not yet a differentiated defender.
City hired Rúben Dias for being young, which is a great differential in European transactions. But they spent a fortune, for a player who can give them a return, or just be one more among many. For almost 70 million euros, it’s a high risk.
COST VS BENEFIT: IS GUARDIOLA WORTH IT ?
Pep Guardiola is one of the most valued coaches nowadays. Since his brilliant performance in Barcelona, with Lionel Messi, his status is almost unshakable.
Since he left Spain, he took over Bayern in Germany and Manchester City in England. Let’s not deny this, Guardiola was hired to be European champion, besides good performances in the national leagues.
Both in Germany and in England, Guardiola was a beast in national competitions. Aggressive and dominant, he made his teams real machines, however, in the main competition, still didn’t succeed.
In 12 years of career in the main teams, he has already asked for a value that exceeds €450 millions in reinforcements. Players like Ibra, Sané, Vidal, Ederson, Bernardo Silva, Mahrez, Rodri, all stand out and surely would give Guardiola enough tools to win the Champions League.
The Spanish coach does not ask for average reinforcements (at least not in values). Players just to compose the team do not fit his demand, and all of those who arrive, must have at least potential to fight for title.
The English press is already winding the possibility of this being a season in which Guardiola will have to show something more. His reinforcements are extremely expensive, and the “Guardiola Project” has gained even more weight with such an expensive hiring of Rúben Dias.
GUARDIOLA WANTED MESSI
Of course, the young defender is not bad, but he is far from being an undisputed starter for the Citizens, even more so if you analyze cost vs benefit. It is good to remember that City had gone strong in the fight to get Messi out of Barcelona, and another fortune would be spent.
Everything in order to give Guardiola the best human material, so maybe he could repeat what he did in Barcelona. Pep is good, very good I would say, but he’s very expensive too.
He already achieved a good champion status in England, but now the Manchester team wants the Europe. Guardiola spends a lot and delivers little in the main competition, and that is a very negative weight. The coach can’t say that the club didn’t help him, and that debt is increasing more and more.
