Demian Maia vs Kamaru Usman – UFC Fight Night : The Brazilian Demian Maia faces the Nigerian Kamaru Usman on UFC Fight Night Chile
On the early morning from Saturday to Sunday.
The Brazilian wasn’t the original opponent for Usman. The fight was supposed to be against another very well-known fighter for the Brazilians, the Argentinian Ponzinibbio, but he ended up injuring himself.
To save the event, Maia took the fight on short notice and will have a tough task ahead of him. That’s because Usman is one of the main contenders of this weight class in the UFC and he is on his way to the belt.
Usman is already the 7th best welterweight and a win over Maia, that is ranked as 5th, might get him on track for a title fight against Woodley. His streak on the UFC is something spectacular.
Since he got to the Ultimate Fighter, he has 7 wins in a row. But if we take into consideration the previous events, he has 11 consecutive victories.
In fact, if we analyse his record, we can see that he has 12 wins and 1 loss. 6 of those wins were by KO, 1 by submission and 5 by decision.
The Brazilian Demian Maia took this fight with courage. At 40 years of age, it’s not simple to face a rising star who is very hungry.
This is the 3rd consecutive fight that Maia will be on that situation. He himself admitted that he is walking towards retiring.
But we cannot forget that recently he fought for the belt and lost, against Tyron Woodley.
Demian is coming off 2 losses in the UFC, to Woodley and Covington. Before that, he had 7 straight wins on this weight class.
Demian Maia vs Kamaru Usman– Betting Tip and Prediction:
But if Usman was preparing himself to face Ponzinibbio, against Maia his strategy will have to change.
Usman will need to avoid the ground because Maia is one of the biggest Jiu Jitsu fighters in the world and definitely the best in the UFC.
If he goes to the ground, he will be in danger.
Therefore, he should fight like Woodley and Covington, keeping his distance, striking and scoring.
That should result in a longer fight because Maia knows how to take a punch (he has only knocked out once in his career) and his experience might give him some resistance.
In that sense, the over in rounds seems like an interesting bet.
