The Italian newspaper “Il Messagero” mentions that Juventus is in real financial trouble these days, taking into consideration the break on the football competitions and the hit that it originated on the club’s finances. Now, the board is supposedly considering the future of their star and most valuable asset.
SALE OF THE PLAYER ON TOP OF THE TABLE?
It is a bit ironical that on a period of crisis, clubs are desperate to maintain their sustainability and in case Juventus advances towards selling Cristiano Ronaldo, we will have another example of that.
In fact, Cristiano has been making an excellent second season with the shirt of the “Vecchia Signora”, carrying the team on several occasions. However, it is also true that the Portuguese earns the highest salary at the club.
Right now, CR7 is earning something like 30 million euros per year, which represents a huge financial effort for the club and, even considering that the player will lower his wage for the next couple of months in order to help the club and show his solidarity, the truth is that the club might still consider selling him.
According to that same newspaper, Andrea Agnelli and the rest of the board have 3 chances on top of the table, with one of them being selling the Portuguese international by around 70 million Euros that would allow them to ensure a considerable cash inflow besides an important relief on the payroll.
But not every club around the world will have the financial availability on this period of crisis to invest 70 million Euros on a 35-year old player that has the 2nd highest salary on the planet, only behind Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
Right now, and still according to the same newspaper, Real Madrid would be the club that could better accommodate Cristiano on their roster, taking into consideration their financial power and the fact the player is heavily missed at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Naturally, this is pure speculation on troubled days. In any case, with the perspective that this worldwide pandemic might last for some time, it is likely that other clubs start to consider this sort of options in the near future.
RENEWAL OR LETTING THE CONTRACT EXPIRE?
According to the “Il Messagero” article, the board of the club from Turin has 3 possibilities on the table for Cristiano Ronaldo. Besides the possibility of transferring the player, Juventus can also allow his contract to expire in 2022 at a time where the player will have 37 years of age and simply let him leave after another year and a half of football at the highest level.
The other possibility, and maybe the most logical one, might be a deal to extend his contract for another year – until 2023 – by means of an immediate salary reduction. That would safeguard the club’s sustainability that wouldn’t have such a large annual expense with their superstar and at the same time would offer the player a sign that they don’t want to get rid of him at this stage.

At an advanced stage of his career, maybe a new change of club wouldn’t be the right move for CR7 that was looking in form and was looking better intermeshed with the Italian side. The stability of the Italian club as well as the proximity of the EURO 2020 and the World Cup on consecutive years might lead Ronaldo into staying in Italy, potentially lowering his wage, especially during this period of crisis.
PERIOD OD CRISIS
In any case, it will always be important to remember that the Portuguese player abandoned Real Madrid precisely because of problems on a contract renewal with the president Florentino Pérez that didn’t want to make an effort for the player.

Ronaldo has already proven he recognizes those who value him and his move to Juventus was almost a retribution for the applauses that the fans of the Italian club presented him with after his fabulous bicycle kick goal. That way, Ronaldo might not fancy a salary reduction, although the period of crisis that we are going through might also convince him that this decision only happened because of it.
For now, this is all just media speculation, but it is legitimate that a lot of clubs are considering their options regarding the most expensive players of their rosters, because times are rough and the most important thing is surviving this especially difficult stage of football history.
