Finally it was confirmed what the fans were expecting: Manny Pacquiao will really face Conor McGregor. The fight will take place in 2021, due to the covid-19 pandemic.

There are extremely remarkable moments in any athlete’s career, and Conor McGregor is collecting a lot of them. The fight against a great international boxing legend, has been very close to be announced, still in the beginning of this year.

In January of this year, at UFC 246 Media Day, where McGregor defeated Donald Cerrone, the Irishman had left open the possibility of fighting Pacquiao.

And the scenario seemed almost concrete, since McGregor even revealed where the fight would take place: the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas Raiders stadium, the NFL team, which was still under construction.

Another factor that contributed a lot for the rumours to increase was when Manny Pacquiao, in February, signed a contract with PSM (Paradigm Sports Management), which is the same agency that takes care of Conor McGregor’s interests. This relighted the fans’ expectation of seeing both of them in a ring, in a superfight.

Last week, the confirmation. The fight between Manny Pacquiao and Conor McGregor will take place in 2021, and the venue will be somewhere in the Middle East. The Irish fighter published in his social media, that he will fight the Philippine boxer.

Something not lacking in McGregor‘s career is controversy. The Irish fighter really knows how to sell his fights, and how to leave his image always on display.

In June, Conor announced for the third time that he will retire. He, who reversed his decision in the years of 2016 and 2019.

In the other two opportunities, the reason for his stop, was the lack of agreement with UFC regarding events, and later he said he would join former partners of the franchise.

We don’t know if this time McGregor will be taken seriously, since he soon confirmed the fight against Pacquiao. The Irish’s manager, in an interview with the United States ESPN, said the fight against Manny Pacquiao would have been approved by the UFC before the pandemic happened.

McGregor published messages exchanged with Dana White, about his next fight. In the pictures, Conor tries to set up a fight with Diego Sanchez, TUF1 champion, who would be willing to fight McGregor before his retirement.

Dana White didn’t agree with the idea, and according to McGregor, UFC‘s president raised the possibility that the Irishman would have an event around his name only when the public was released to return to the events.

McGregor did not accept that, and according to him: “I had already waited too long”. The fight against Pacquiao will possibly be his return, this if he doesn’t give up his retirement for the third time.

This will be a great fight, for sure. According to McGregor, Mayweather and Pacquiao are amongst the greatest fighters of the modern era.
Pacquiao hasn’t fought since the middle of 2019, when he went up in the ring to beat Keith Thurman, in a 12th round decision.

Now, Manny is a senator for the Philippines, at the height of his 41 years.

McGregor made his boxing debut in 2017, when he was defeated in the 10th round by Floyd Mayweather. The fight was a real show, and an event worthy of going down in history.

Pacquiao set up a gigantic event, when he competed with Floyd Mayweather. But now, he’ll have to show the same ability to hold an event of this size, as his old opponent had.

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather spent years negotiating, and trash talking in interviews. The fight had the largest pay-per-view sale in history at the time, with over 4.6 million packages acquired. The fight ended with Mayweather’s victory, by unanimous decision.

Will the “Pac-Man” now be able to generate the same euphoria as when Floyd faced McGregor? The fight referred to, moved more than 1 billion, among tickets, fighting stocks, sponsorships and pay-per-view sales.

Floyd raised a total of 100 million dollars, while McGregor earned 30 million dollars, just for going up the ring. These amounts still do not include sponsorships, awards, etc.

During the fight, Mayweather gave a boxing lesson. In the beginning, McGregor behaved well, he managed to attack Floyd until the 4th round, who studied him in all ways. Mayweather’s class was unquestionable, undermining Conor with blows, and good mobility.

McGregor couldn’t stand it anymore, his physique was wearing out, Floyd kept himself intact, and full of explosion. That was when in the tenth round…

…Mayweather knocked out the Irish and won the “money fight.” Now Pacquiao struggles to promote money for the covid-19 victims in his country.

A noble gesture, and a fight that will yield a lot of money. However, beating Conor’s previous boxing fight marks will be difficult.

Pacquiao doesn’t put on the same show as Floyd, although he has a very strong name. The “circus” will be great, but a little smaller.
