Despite distinct results, Desportivo de Chaves and Sport Lisboa e Benfica were among the teams who had a good showing on the 1st matchday of this Liga NOS.
The mistakes committed by Desportivo de Chaves on their match against Vitória de Guimarães were, however, too notorious to allow them to fight for points that time.
It was evident on the Chaves’ playstyle the principles that Luís Castro is trying to implement, but the weakness of some of their movements, on this season start, allowed Guimarães to obtain too much possession on their midfield.
The team from Chaves started trailing 0-3, but they could have been losing by more, since Vitória missed a lot of chances.
However, they were still able to score twice, to reduce the lead to 2-3 on the final stretch of the match.
Against Benfica, any mistake will probably lead to a conceded goal. Luís Castro already announced that he will not be changing his strategy, opting to try and make their players learn from being exposed to danger.
Benfica played well against Sporting de Braga, dominating for long periods of the match, and getting to 2-0 with relative ease.
They weren’t able to hide however, their defensive weakness, which is normal in this stage of the season, which allowed Braga to come back into the match.
Still, with the 3-1 win, Benfica showed once more that their demolishing attack allows them to get 3 points, compensating for their defensive mistakes.
Jonas and Seferovic, supported by a pressuring midfield, are excellent weapons to try and take down Chaves.
Chaves vs Benfica Pick:
I expect an open match and quality football, between two teams who like to have the initiative and that are always looking for the goal.
The superior quality of the Reds will allow them to be on top for several periods of the match, but the expected mistakes of both defensive lines might make the score a bit livelier than it maybe was expected.
This will be a close and impressive match in Chaves, hopefully with goals.
