Without the importance it has in other countries, the SuperCup in Germany tends to be played at the stadium of the team who wasn’t able to conquer the league title last season.
So, for the 5th time in a row, Bayern will play this final away from home, at Dortmund, where they will face a Borussia side who won the German Cup in 2017.
These teams have met 4 times before in this competition, with the respective hosts lifting the trophy 3 times out of those 4 (Bayern once and Dortmund twice).
From both pre-seasons, there aren’t many conclusions to reach. Borussia Dortmund has changed their manager, and they are now led by Peter Bosz, who arrived from Ajax. Despite winning against AC Milan, they lost to Espanyol and to Atalanta.
Bayern Munchen, who signed some good players in Corentin Tolisso and James Rodriguez (loan), beat Chelsea, but then went on a losing streak, losing to Inter, Liverpool and Napoli. These last two were in the Audi Cup, a friendly competition being played in their stadium, the Allianz Arena.
It will all come down to how serious they take this match. But normally it is a really open match, with teams focusing more on refining their offensive processes than in actually winning the match.
The Bundesliga will only start in the weekend of 18th/19th of August, so, for now, it isn’t really a very important match, and will serve more as an indicator of how the teams are at the moment.
Dortmund vs Bayern Pick:
It isn’t an easy match to predict a winner, especially because of the relaxed nature of this SuperCup.
But with Lewandowski and Muller on one side and Aubameyang and Dembelé on the other, there’s a high chance that we will se a match with a lot of goals.
I don’t want to get fooled by Bayern’s poor results in these mid-week matches, but I expect Dortmund to dominate the early stages of this match
