Barcelona preparing a revolution on the roster for 2020/21
- Updated: 2nd April 2020
Despite leading the Spanish La Liga and still being on the Champions League, Barcelona’s season has been highly inconsistent and their responsible are already working in the sense of operating a small revolution this summer. Take a look…
Eight players on their way out…
The Blaugrana seems to be decided to inject some new blood into its roster, but for that they will need to earn some money with sales as well as relief their payroll. In that sense, 8 players are transfer listed and the club will work in the sense of finding a solution for all of them in order to open up space for new signings.
Amongst the set of potential departures are Ivan Rakitic that continues to be in dispute with the club since last season and his fate might even be a return to his origin club, Sevilla, where he won several titles before leaving for Barcelona. Other of the names that were disclosed was Arturo Vidal that never truly imposed himself at the club, maybe due to his playstyle that isn’t very suitable for the club.
The Chilean veteran might be included on a potential deal to sign Lautaro Martínez from Inter Milan and the Italians should be excited about the arrival of a very interesting player to their roster. Other less utilized players such as Neto, Martin Braithwaite or Júnior can have short stays in Catalunya since the Blaugrana club might free them at the end of the season.
A luxurious trio that will please many clubs
But the 3 most discussed names amongst this list of 8 players are Samuel Umtiti, Phillippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann.
The French central defender has been dealing with several injury problems this season and he was never exactly an example of consistency and defensive safety, which means he shouldn’t be an important absence at a time where the club is even looking for another central defender that can offer the guarantees that the French player hasn’t been offering.
Then, we have the case of Coutinho who won’t sign for Bayern München at the end of the season after a modest campaign playing for the Bavarians, which means Barcelona should look for a new paid loan for the Brazilian player, trying to have him make his recovery on a different club before a definitive sale that allows them to recover a good portion of the investment made on the player.

To conclude, Antoine Griezmann might be heading out only 1 season after signing for Barcelona and that decision can be motivated by two aspects: firstly, the French has been having a somewhat modest debut season for the expectations that surrounded him when he came to the club, and secondly because Barcelona might be about to make a move for Neymar, and I don’t believe it would make any sense to have a player of Griezmann’s quality on the bench.
Besides that, his sale should allow the club to earn a good amount of money which might help them in seducing Neymar.
Five targets on the marget, with Neymar as the biggest one
With the likely departures of Griezmann and Braithwaite, Barcelona should try to sign 2 attackers, likely Neymar and a striker that can work as a complement to Luis Suárez. Besides those two targets, Barcelona should also look for another midfielder since they might lose Rakitic and Vidal simultaneously.
Without knowing exactly what’s the desired profile for midfield, I believe that Quique Setien should be looking for a versatile midfielder that can make the link between defence and attack. For the left side of defence they should also sign a player, with Alex Telles from FC Porto being the biggest rumour these days.

FC Porto’s wing back could be an excellent complement to Jordi Alba, offering the Blaugrana roster two excellent options for the position, something that isn’t true right now.
To conclude, and as I’ve mentioned above, Barcelona will try to sign a central defender with credentials that can add some defensive safety and solidity that has been missing at the club, namely on the player that has been partnering up with Gerard Pique.
Ousmane Dembélé will have a new opportunity…
Another one of the recent heft signings from Barcelona that hasn’t been getting the expected success – in the same line of Coutinho and Griezmann – is Ousmane Dembéle, but the virtuoso French winger benefits from the fact he is younger and has a bigger progression margin.
Besides that, he cost 125 million euros and he hasn’t exactly been valued since he arrived in Catalunya, with a lot of disciplinary problems and also with a lot of injuries. The club needs to recover before even thinking about selling him by a price that allows them to recover a portion of the investment on the player.
