Arsenal hosts Leicester City in the 1st match day of the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium.
It will be an interesting duel, since Leicester, despite not being able to renew their Premier League title last season, are still a competitive team.
The team played 7 friendly matches over the course of the pre-season. Two of those matches were in the Premier Asian Trophy, where they drew against West Bromwich and then lost against Liverpool.
Returning to England, they won against Luton Town and Borussia Monchengladbach. The team also drew against MK Dons and lost to Burton and to Wolverhampton.
Despite the heavy harassment on their key players, Leicester was able to keep their key players like Mahrez and Vardy. Besides that, they signed some new players that can become interesting such as Maguire and Iheanacho, the last one coming from Manchester City.
Arsenal also had a pre-season with a lot of uncertainty. First, there was a lot of doubts whether Wenger should stay or not in charge of the club despite his failure in the last couple of years.
He ended up staying, despite some objection. For example, after many seasons, Arsenal is out of the Champions League this season, and will have to settle for the Europa League.
Arsenal vs Leicester – Pick:
On the transfer market, the team also was underwhelming. Without the “firepower” of many of the bigger buyers of European football, Arsenal only snatched up French prospect Lacazette from Lyon for 53 million Euros.
They are still in risk of losing Alexis Sanchez, who is wanted by several clubs. The season started off well with them winning the Community Shield against Chelsea.
Clearly Arsenal will be favourites at home, but I disagree that they are this heavy of a favourite. Leicester is a dangerous team, who is able to contest and even bother Arsenal, despite playing at the Emirates.
Besides that, I haven’t seen nothing special from Arsenal in the pre-season who made me imagine such a big technical improvement. I believe that the visitors can even lose, but I don’t think they will be demolished.
